What’s the difference between LVT and LVP?

They may sound the same, but there are differences. First of all, LVT stands for Luxury Vinyl Tile. LVP stands for Luxury Vinyl Plank. So let’s look at some differences.

Luxury Vinyl Tile

The LVT is a tile that replicates the image of a tile floor. The LVT also forgives when you drop things on it, like dishes. The impact is cushioned a little more, so there is minor damage to no damage on the tile. If there is damage to the floor, the good news is that you don’t have to replace the entire floor. All you have to do is replace the tile. So there is a more cost practical benefit over the life of your floor.

Luxury Vinyl Plank

LVP is luxury vinyl that looks like a wood product on your floors. A three-dimensional image of a wood floor, like oak, maple, or cherry, is placed on a vinyl backing. The image is a vinyl core consisting of PVC plastic. The top layer of the LVP is commercially rated toughness. So it is more forgiving when you walk on it. Like the LVT, if you have a damaged plank, you take it up and put down a new plank, and it's like it never happened.

Installation

LVP and LVT are extremely easy to put down for your installers. They have a floating technique like a tongue and groove locking system. This creates an interlocking seal over the existing subfloor. If your subfloor is not level or not smooth enough, luxury vinyl is a forgiving material. It'll adhere more to the contours of the floor and won't show imperfections. You can have an underlayment laid down on the subfloor or even purchase a luxury vinyl flooring product with attached underlayment. This will cushion the floor and smooth out imperfections, and it will act as a sound absorber, so your footsteps don't sound so harsh. Both products can also be glued to the subfloor.
